the princess cruises past the island.

the princess, circa 1950.

remember the princess? here she's shown making an afternoon cruise around the lake, with the island in the background. is that a roller-coaster i hear? the princess was one of the early gasoline engine-powered boats on the lake. she survived a capsizing during a heavy storm in 1931 and continued to work the lake until her rather ignominious "retirement" to the silver boot amusement park.

bayside amusement park was situated along the shore, just inside the island. this pencil sketch by clear lake artist j. r. larson, showing the princess docked at the bayside pier, is available from the chamber of commerce online gift shop.
