don't let the title scare you. this is really pretty innocuous stuff.
mostly. here's the contents of the original beverages and booze chapter:
better-than-baileys
art and barb woodward
art and barb discovered this at a dinner with some college friends at
grinnell, where it was served with coffee. she says its good, and she's right,
as usual.
-
1 - 15 oz can sweetened condensed milk
-
3 eggs
-
3 to 5 tbsp chocolate syrup
-
1 - 10 oz carton non-dairy frozen creamer, defrosted
-
1 cup whiskey
simple enough. just put into a blender and whirl it up good. it needs to be
refrigerated for storage.
bourbon punch
cynthia woodward peterson
this was the petersons christmas party special, says cindy.
-
3 qts. apple cider
-
1/4 cup brown sugar
-
1/2 to 3/4 cup lemon juice
-
1 tbsp whole cloves
-
3 - 3-inch cinnamon sticks
-
1 tsp whole allspice
-
1 red apple, sliced
-
3 1/2 cups bourbon
whiskey
tie the spices in a bag and combine all of the ingredients but the apples
and bourbon. bring to a boil, then add the apples and bourbon. may also put the
spices in basket of percolator and do as a percolator punch, adding the bourbon
and apples at the end.
hot buttered cranberry punch
a non-alcoholic punch, also from the
petersons
combine all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil. add cranberry
juice and pineapple juice and serve steaming hot with a dot of butter floated on
top.
everybody's favorite cocoa mix
mom dee
this is so easy it's ridiculous. another example of the sort of good things
mom kept on hand in the kitchen for kids of all ages and sizes.
-
1 one-lb box nestl's quick
-
1 one-lb box powdered sugar
-
1 eight-oz jar coffeemate
-
1 eight-qt box instant powdered milk
to prepare, just dump all the stuff into a large bowl and mix it up real
good. then pour it into a large jar (a gallon size best mayonnaise jar from a
restaurant kitchen is just right) for storage.
to serve, scoop a quarter cup or so of the mix into a mug, add hot water,
and stir. oh boy! let it snow.
crock pot wassail
mom dee
mom says that she and dad made this on christmas day, 1979, and "they really
enjoyed it!" of course, they added the rum. :>)
put all the ingredients into a crock-pot. turn on high for 1 hr. and then
turn to low for 4 to 8 hrs. makes 12 cups.
orange julius
mom dee
put into blender on high and blend. you could, says mom, add a raw egg and
some nutmeg. you could.
greg's frozen margaritas
lt. col. gregory g. bombinski
this is a for-real south-of-the-border air force good-times tradition. great
to come home to after a tough day at the office. happy landings!
totally foolproof. just dump the stuff into a blender, fill with ice, and
whirl away.
lynne's frozen strawberry daiquiris
lynne hayward bombinski
same procedure as greg's margaritas, above. sort of sweet - tart, cool and
delicious. watch your approach after a few of these.
yukka
memories of dear old grinnell
another original, folks! this time from the hallowed halls of almost
everyone's alma mater, circa 1970. so close your eyes and take a trip to
never-never land. turn on the strobes, turn up the bob seeger music, and watch
the day-glo posters!
put lemons and sugar or mix into mason jar. fill with ice. fill with vodka.
wrap jar in towel and shake.
yukka! did they really drink stuff like this?
sangria
researched by lynne and greg bombinski
this is the real thing, folks. lifted by our intrepid pair from jesus, an
unsuspecting cafe / bar proprietor in torrejon, spain, during the time greg was
doing his air force tour of duty there. poor jesus. i wonder if he knew he was
being espionaged. what panache! what diligence! what a huge bar bill! talk about
dedication. thanks, guys.
-
2 1/2 cups lemon fanta
-
1/4 cup white vermouth
-
1/2 cup powdered sugar
-
2 cups red wine
-
1/2 sliced lemon
-
1/2 sliced orange
-
1 cup ice
combine the vermouth, sugar, wine and fruit. store in fridge until needed.
add fanta just before serving. ole! (or something equally very spanish). as a
substitute for the fanta, says lynne, try using squirt.
panther piss
a golf course smoothie from uncle art
the honors for this smooth and delightful beverage go to none other than the
old buzzard himself and his crony, grinnell coach ed bowers. seems that art and
coach ed were on the golf course at grinnell one fine iowa afternoon and were
getting bored with their game so they set about inventing the perfect half-time
refreshment. i suspect the back nine was a lot more interesting!
the real trick here is getting the color right. that's why the ingredients
list is a bit loose, to allow for individual differences. what we're after here
is a pleasing amber, like about a two-beer piss, a three- or four-beer piss
being too light (too much like a pilsner, which this stuff is certainly not),
and a no- or one-beer piss being too colored, like something you'd leave with
the nurse to be examined.
now, why those guys thought panther urine was a suitable standard here, i
have no idea. it certainly does have a nice ring to it, though. gives you sort
of a nice fuzzy as you gulp, er, sip it.
of course, if you're into fine points about things, and want to be
absolutely sure you get it right, you could take a trip down to the zoo and,
well, you get the idea. just don't get caughtno one would believe you were
doing honest research.
tell them art sent you.
-
2 parts rum
-
1 part vodka
-
1 can limeade mix
-
club soda or 7-up
combine in a large pitcher, mix and hope for the best.
fish house punch
peg & bob ferguson
the ferguson's are friends of mom and dad and obviously know how to throw a
party! or at least a good warm-up.
peg and bob say to simply mix all the stuff together, add some cherries for
color, and serve it up. they add that the recipe can easily be doubled or
tripled and, in fact, "you better." let the good times roll!
pat's punch
pat bastian
one of pat's well-known party specialties, served, no doubt, on the shaded
porches of the "house on the hill."
-
2 bottles champagne
-
1 bottle sauterne
-
1 bottle ginger ale
-
grenadine syrup to taste & color
-
slices of lemon, orange, lime
just mix it up and serve. keep the designated driver honest and have fun!
purple paralyzer
john v. hayward and clark grey
dad and his pal clark used to hang around together in davenport, when dad
wasn't sailing snipes on the mississippi river or tending to business at the
davenport ladder company. this invention should give you some idea of how
productively(?) they spent their time.
mix equal amounts of
-
grape juice
-
ginger ale
-
bourbon whiskey
in a tall glass over ice, and serve.
russian tea
carol hirstine hayward
i think this showed up for the first time back in the early seventies when i
was going to school at western washington university and the four of us, carol
and suzie and libby and i, were living in mt. vernon. carol was working at a
dentist's office in bellingham and one of the assistants, who didn't like
coffee, brought in a jar of this for hot drinks.
i don't know that there is anything at all russian about it, but it makes a
pretty good hot orange beverage. used to keep a jar of it around, along with
everybody's favorite cocoa mix, in the shop at cascade canvas company, where
it was also popular.
mix all the ingredients together thoroughly and store in an airtight
container. a 1-liter french canning jar works well. to serve, stir 2 or 3
heaping teaspoons-full into a cup of steaming hot water.
scott's margaritas
capt. scott lindbergh
& capt. stephen v. hayward
(call me poncho, man)
scott lindbergh was a very competent sailboat skipper who worked with us at
performance sailing, until he couldn't take the heat any more in an inside job
and went someplace quieter.
one of scott's more notable contributions to everyone's sanity in that
sometimes madhouse was the immediate forerunner of this smoothest of all
margarita recipes. with a little reworking it turned into, if i may say so, a
fiesta good drink.
-
1 cup jose cuervo
gold tequila
-
1/4 cup rose's lime juice
-
1 - 6 oz can frozen limeade
-
1/4 cup triple sec
-
1/4 cup galliano liqueur
fill a blender jug 2/3 full of ice cubes. add the remaining ingredients and
blend on high until the cubes are thoroughly crushed.
serve in traditional margarita glasses with salt-rimmed edges. a word of
cautionthis stuff goes down so easily it can really sneak up on you, so watch
it.
improved bloody mary
stephen v. hayward
i ran into this terrific bloody mary at a cocktail party / brunch one
mid-western sunny sunday morning in des moines a few years ago. a real classy
drink and easy to fix.
-
v8 juice
-
snap-e-tom cocktail mix
-
vodka
-
wedges of lime
-
tabasco sauce
mix the v8 and snap-e-tom half and half. the little 6 oz cans work well if
you want to just pour from them into the glassesabout half of each for each
cocktail. drop three ice cubes and a lime wedge into a rocks glass, add 1-1/2 oz
vodka and fill with the juice mixture. top off with a dash of tabasco. stand by
for compliments.
eggnog
created in honor of our barred rock
layers by
suzie hayward
sue's favorite chore at the whatcom county place was cleaning out the
chicken house. right. well, even if she didn't care much for that job, she
really liked the fresh eggs we had all of the
time. we kept, among lots of other things, barred rock hens, which are really
great layers, producing large brown eggs. we had so many eggs around we were
hard put to come up with ways to use them all. this recipe was sue's
contribution.
-
1 fresh egg
-
2 tbsp sugar
-
dash salt
-
1 cup milk
-
1/2 tsp vanilla
break egg into mixing bowl, then beat egg until smooth and creamy. next add
sugar and salt, and stir until dissolved. mix in milk and vanilla. serves one.
also, serve immediately, says sue.
